The cooler weather is here and for many of us, that means it’s time to break out the slow cooker and start thinking of some wholesome, delicious recipes. It seems the slow cooker has always been a staple in many kitchens because of how easy they are to use. You just throw in your ingredients, turn it on and in about 8 hours, you have a home cooked meal that required very little effort.
The slow cooker comes in a variety of styles and colors and can be very basic with just two settings, or more advanced with programmable settings and electronic display to tell you when your food is ready. I have always liked the slow cooker with the little knob on the front that had a low, high and keep warm setting. Just turn it on and check it once in a while until it’s done.
One of the benefits of using slow cookers is their versatility. You can cook everything from soups, stews and rice dishes, to roasts, chicken and ham. Slow cookers have even been used to make some very decadent desserts including cakes, cobblers and brownies. If you can come up with a recipe, a slow cooker can cook it. And let’s not forget about the aroma that fills the house when using slow cookers. You get home from a long day at work and you are greeted with the aroma of dinner that has been simmering all day. Before even taking your coat off, you grab a fork and take a taste. The tender roast is falling apart easily and soaking up the gravy. Dinner is ready and you didn’t have to do a thing.
It doesn’t even have to be dinner cooking in a slow cooker to put a smile on your face. Many people will start breakfast the night before and wake up to a breakfast casserole filling the house with the smells of potatoes, peppers, sausage and eggs.
The slow cooker has proven its worth in homes throughout the nation and they make cooking easy and cleanup even easier. If you don’t have a slow cooker, go out and get one and give it a try. You might find that it’s your favorite kitchen appliance.
