For a while I was seriously considering moving to Montreal from Las Vegas. One of my biggest concerns was how to keep warm. This coming from a guy who moved to Las Vegas from Los Angeles partly because Southern California was not warm enough. Funny thing it is down right cold in the high dessert Las Vegas is situated in. You never see that written in any of the brochures though. Ugh! Anyway… Someone suggested, “Have plenty of warm socks.” Right. Great idea. Who doesn’t like warm socks? Surfers I guess? I will ask my surfer friend Hilary Billings. Who does like warm socks? Me!
I love going to the laundry room when I hear the dryer’s “I’m done” bell sound off and reaching in and grab a pair of warm socks to slip on my cold feet. Then I generally cover my socks with the footwear du jour depending on the day’s mission; slippers if working indoors, combat boots if out on a mission or dress shoes if out on the town. (Sometimes combat books indoors too. Depends.) or sometimes I prefer to just go shoeless.
To me the thing about wearing warm socks is they are so relaxing. Maybe it is because they remind me of the few happy times I remember from my childhood. Lazy days with not a care in the world while I played with Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Hot Wheels or Lego blocks. Or maybe warm socks remind me of Christmas mornings sitting by the fireplace with friends and family all around when I was older. Maybe having warm socks on reminds me I am no longer trudging through snow or mud in some far away land wearing itchy and rough wool socks and am now home and safe and dry.
It is often said you lose most of your body heat from your head, hands and feet. I recently learned from Josh and Chuck at Stuff You Should Know that is not necessarily true. They say you lose just as much heat per square inch through your head as you do through the rest of the body. Whether they are correct or not, and I do tend to side with them, one thing is for sure, having warm feet makes me feel warm and toasty inside.
Warm socks = warm feet = warm heart = big smiles.
What do you think about warm socks? Is there much better? Maybe if they were new socks? Let me know in the comments and if you have any clue where all those missing socks are please let me know that too. Thanks.
