We have all had to return something at one point or another and whether we have our receipt in hand or not, we expect that certain places will accept the return without any hassle and, of course, without the compulsory receipt. I have always known that clothing stores, mall stores especially, always require a receipt when you are making a return; it’s just common sense right? And I know you girlies are ‘wardrobing‘ where you buy something just to wear it and return it right? (Shhhh. I won’t give away your secret. But Bloomingdale’s is on to you.)
I purchased a very nice hoodie type jacket from a popular store at the mall. The jacket was perfect, the purchase went well and I wore it daily. Makes sense right? Summer in Las Vegas is right around the corner. Why not buy a jacket? A few weeks later I am walking past the store and I notice the very same jacket but it was in the color that I originally wanted when I bought mine. They were out of that color and I really did not want to wait for a rain check, so I bought the grey one. Anyway, the blue jacket looked so much better and I had to have it. I double-checked the tag in my jacket to ensure the size I needed was indeed the size on the new jacket, purchased it and went on with my day. I got home, tore off all of the tags and washed the jacket. Did I keep the tags? Not at all, why would I? I already had the very same jacket in the same size and it had served me well. I certainly did not need the tags.
Later that day, I grabbed my jacket off of the drying rack and put it on; well, I tried to put it on. It did not fit! I could not even get it over my shoulders! I did not dry it so it did not shrink and it was the exact same jacket and the same size as the first one…so I thought. There had to be a mistake, but I still had to return it as I could not wear it even if I starved myself for a month! Back to the store I went and just as I arrived, I realized that I did not have the tags, the receipt or even the bag it came in. At this point I really did not want to go all the way back home, then back to the mall and deal with Las Vegas rush hour traffic. With my jacket in hand (and tail between my legs) I went into the Hugo Boss store and told them that I needed to make a return as the jacket did not fit.
Whenever I have to deal with things like this I always expect to get this cashier-
Glaring over the register at me with all those questions. Did you check the size? Did you wash and dry it? Have you worn it and why did not you try it on before you bought it? Then, finally, comes the last question, “Do you have your receipt? I felt sick, I was going to end up having to keep this not inexpensive hoodie that does not fit. Ugh!
Fortunately I got a clerk like Kirby from Kum & Go.
She did something that I was surely not expecting. She took the jacket, looked it over and asked me for my credit card so she could process the return. I was amazed and relieved! Who does that? Who accepts a return from a customer without a receipt and without the tags or anything else stating that I had purchased this jacket at their location and it just simply did not fit as expected and maybe there was a mistake or something?
That was the greatest feeling in the world and they have just made a customer for life. I walked out of there feeling like I was at the top of the world; it really felt that good to have a true, no-hassle transaction where there should have been a great big “No” instead. I will always make a point to bring along my receipt any time I need to return anything, but that clerk went above and beyond for me that day and it really made me smile!
Good things always happen to me. Good things always happen to me. Good things always happen to me. I keep telling myself that.
Oh and by the way…
