With the middle of winter on its way, the days are getting colder and, with many of us getting older, we are feeling it more and more. You know when you get so cold that you feel it deep down in your bones? That feeling when you just can not get warm? Ugh.
The first thing I want to do when I come in the house is turn the heat up and grab a blanket before I hit the couch for my favorite show or book. Is that fiscally responsible in any way? Probably not, and it doesn’t really do much more than warm my skin; the heat doesn’t quite get down to my bones where I need it. There is one thing that does and it always brings a smile to my face; a nice, hot shower.
A hot shower can do wonders for a body and I’m not just talking about hygiene. No matter what kind of day you have had, stepping into a hot shower and feeling the water pour down over you makes all of the day’s cares wash away with it. I sometimes take a hot shower just so I have a quiet, relaxing place to think. It gives me a bit of respite from the day and cheers me up with one of the biggest, goofiest smiles ever. It’s for that reason alone that I don’t have a shaving mirror in my shower anymore!
I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s some kind of primitive comfort thing or it has to do with our nerve receptors telling our brain that everything is fine and it’s time to relax. Whatever it is, a hot shower is one of the best feelings in the world and it is a definite smile maker. I take them even on the hottest of days because even though it may be 110 degrees outside, nothing feels like the heat that a hot shower can provide on our tired, aching bodies.
The best thing about a hot shower is that you don’t need anything else with it. You don’t really need those fancy soaps and body washes that you have littered all over the bathroom and you don’t need to play any music for it to be a peaceful, relaxing time. Just the water itself, hitting your body providing its warmth is all you need for a truly world class smile. Having a nice shower head with multiple settings is nice too. I want to get one that makes it seem like it is raining so I can close my eyes and imagine I am bathing outside in the Amazon or Bali or someplace tropical like that. Now, if only I could find an endless supply of hot water for my showers I would be all set!
According to ContactMusic.com Hugh Jackman found Wolverine’s rage in a cold shower. The article said laid-back actor Hugh Jackman credits freezing cold showers for getting him in the mood to play angry X-Men character Wolverine. He recalls, “My wife was asleep, it’s, like, five o’clock in the morning and there’s no hot water, so my hair was full of the hairspray from the day before and I had to take a shower. It was freezing cold water and I was so pissed. A cold shower in the middle of a Toronto winter and I had to be under there for two minutes. I was half way through it and I went, ‘This is it!’ This feeling was so through my body that I wanted to scream but you couldn’t, so that was kind of the character. So, every morning and every time I play that role now, it’s become superstitious almost. I always take a cold shower first thing in the morning – just to get pissed off.”
See? Cold showers suck. Just sayin’
If they ever put me in charge of things I am gonna make sure everyone has enough water to drink and there is never a shortage of water. That way we can all take all the long hot showers we want. That should make for plenty of smiles.
