Just before Halloween I saw something at the store I just knew I had to try- Hello Kitty hot chocolate. I grabbed a can, paid for it and knowing I would not be returning this item I did not even grab a receipt before heading home.
Today was a pretty chilly day where I live so while sitting around the house watching the football playoffs, which by the way, were being played in much colder areas than my Las Vegas location, I decided to make myself a cup of Hello Kitty hot chocolate.
Grabbed my coffee mug that I got from Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas that says ‘Rock Star’ on the side, filled it with some milk and warmed it all up in the microwave. When it was ready I added three big tablespoons of the hot chocolate mix and stirred it in till it was all combined. I could barely wait to taste it and see how delicious it was and believe you me it was indeed a delicious cup of cocoa on this chilly day and before you know it I was feeling much warmer and noticed a new smile forming just below my rosey cheeks.
Once again Hello Kitty saves the day! But I got to thinking that hot chocolate must be one of the most widely consumed hot drinks since both adults and children drink it. Then I was wondering if there is a difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa even though the words seem to be interchangeable? The baker part of my brain recalled that of course there is a difference between hot chocolate and hot cocoa.
So what is the difference between cocoa and chocolate? Cocoa is the powder obtained from cocoa beans that are found inside the fruit of the cacao tree. Chocolate is a product that contains a minimum of 35% of cocoa products such as cocoa powder, cocoa butter and cocoa mass as well as sugar. Chocolate contains both cocoa powder as well as cocoa butter, whereas cocoa powder is just a powder and no butter.
So to correct what I said at the beginning of this post, I didn’t actually have a cup of Hello Kitty hot chocolate. It was actually hot cocoa. Either way, it was delicious!
Regardless of what it actually is, do you call it ‘hot chocolate’ or ‘cocoa’ or something different? Click here to leave a comment and share your opinion and experience. Would love to hear from you.
