Can you believe the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas was released over 20 years ago? It is true. It was released on Oct 24, 1993 in America.
Have you seen it? If not, What are you waiting for?
The Nightmare Before Christmas is a stop motion musical fantasy film produced/co-written by Tim Burton. Danny Elfman wrote the film score and provided the singing voice of Jack, as well as some other minor characters. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, a being from “Halloween Town” who opens a portal to “Christmas Town” and decides to celebrate the holiday, with some dastardly and comical consequences.
According to John Reeves from IMDB “Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, is bored with doing the same thing every year for Halloween. One day he stumbles into Christmas Town, and is so taken with the idea of Christmas that he tries to get the resident bats, ghouls, and goblins of Halloween town to help him put on Christmas instead of Halloween — but alas, they can’t get it quite right.”
It is part avant-garde art film and part amusing yet morbid fairy tale although for me it has a special message. A message of discovery and growth. Nightmare Before Christmas reminds me to never lose that childlike wonder or curiosity. It reminds me to never stop growing or looking for and noticing or experiencing things around you that you may have never noticed before or which are being introduced to you for the first time. There are many instances in the film, and in fact a whole scene, where Jack discovers many new things and sings “What’s this?” such as when he first discovers snow and snowflakes which apparently are not found in Halloween Town.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my all-time favorite movies and always makes me smile.
